Deakin Melbourne Boomers

Join Caribbean Park in supporting the Deakin Melbourne Boomers. The Boomers are one of eight teams in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) and play their games right here on our doorstep, at the State Basketball Centre.

Get up close and personal with superstars Cayla George, Ezi Magbegor and Maddie Garrick by going along to a game or getting your hands on a 4-game membership.

The Boomers currently have a special offer of buy 1 get 1 free on their 4-game membership so now’s the time to get on board!

Here are ten good reasons why you should come to watch the Boomers:

  1. The State Basketball Centre is super easy to get to and has ample FREE parking
  2. Deakin Melbourne Boomers have a jumping castle that’s a basketball court for the kids to play in. It’s seriously awesome
  3. Deakin Melbourne Boomers have a two-person basketball shooting game (thanks to their friends at LightFM) that the kids (and big kids) can have a go on
  4. Deakin Melbourne Boomers offer ‘fan mail’– a place where kids can write letters to the Boomers athletes, and pop them in their mailbox. They pass on all of these letters to the players
  5. Deakin Melbourne Boomers give away Bertocchi hams during the game. Yes, you heard it right, Bertocchi hams. Who doesn’t love a free ham!
  6. If the Deakin Melbourne Boomers win, you win! Thanks to the Pancake Parlour, this season for every home game we win, anyone who attended the game can go to Pancake Parlour for a free short stack! Full disclosure, we’ve already  tested this (the pancakes are sensational!)
  7. Deakin Melbourne Boomers memberships and ticket prices are far less than the NBL, making it a really affordable day or night out for your family
  8. Deakin Melbourne Boomers athletes stay on the court for up to 45 minutes after the game signing autographs and taking photos with every last person who wants one
  9. You’d be supporting women in sport, the Boomers athletes, and the WNBL
  10. Deakin Melbourne Boomers athletes are incredible role models for kids and adults alike (read their article about it here).

Congratulations Matthews Australasia

Matthews Australasia has been inducted into Family Business Australia’s Hall of Fame.

The announcement was made during the Awards Dinner at The Family Business Conference in Melbourne on September 3rd 2019..

Lester Nichol, chairman of Matthews Australasia, said staff throughout the company were delighted.

“As founder of this business, I feel immense pride in Matthews Australasia being recognised in this way. Every single employee plays an important role. A good analogy is an engine: every part needs to work properly, and together, for success. That’s what we have at Matthews. The fact it’s a family business just makes that all the more special.”

Matt Nichol is Matthews Australasia’s regional sales manager and part of the second generation in the business along with his brother Ben, who is the company’s supply chain and procurement manager.

Matt said, “The Hall of Fame citation recognises the achievements of families who are managing businesses that are both respected and successful. Family businesses account for nearly 70% of all businesses in Australia; those of us who are involved in these businesses know the significant role they play in our community, society and indeed the economy, and this induction certainly recognises all that.”

The FBA said that key to Matthews’ induction this year was their highly regarded brand and product offering that reflects quality, value and integrity, along with professional governance, all of which reflects the standards that FBA upholds in a family business. Another aspect was their best-practice transition plan, which they began planning out several years ago. Mark Dingley, who joined the company in 1994 in customer service, worked alongside the family to take over as CEO, which he did in June 2017. Supported by a talented and diverse Board, the plan meant Matthews was always stably managed, and the transition was smooth. The plan also ensures they have the optimal mix of experience, knowledge and fresh ideas. FBA said this approach also set the business apart.

Matt continued, “I am part of the FBA’s Victoria-Tasmania Committee, so I know just how important all these points are. As a company, we are truly honoured to be inducted into the FBA Hall of Fame and recognised for our achievements.”

Lester Nichol said, “The Hall of Fame is a highly esteemed peer commendation, with previous inductees all being outstanding family businesses of various sizes from across Australia. Matthews is very proud to now be part of this.”

Armbands for Causes is an initiative offering up to a 40% discount for sports teams that wish to use Nitto’s electrical tape during honorary events or to raise awareness for charitable causes. The company has launched the initiative following several requests from sports clubs all over Australia who regularly contact Nitto Australia to about using the company’s electrical tape for their players to wear during matches.

Nitto Australia’s Sales and Marketing Director, Ben Mitchell said: “It came to our attention that our customer service department often receive enquiries from small to large sports clubs regarding using our electrical tape as commemorative armbands during matches. The Nitto Australia team is made up of football and netball players and passionate sports fans, so we understood the significance behind these requests and felt obliged to give something back”.

Nitto electrical tape has been used as commemorative armbands in Australia since the 1980s and this isn’t the first time the company has used their electrical tape’s reach to raise awareness of important causes. In 2018, Nitto became a corporate partner of McGrath Foundation and released their electrical tape in pink to raise awareness of breast cancer and donated $2 from each pack, culminating in a $115,000 donation to the charity.

Ben added, “Our tape is sold through our extensive distribution network, as our customers depend on our product’s reliability, safety and durability. But if a sports club or group wishes to use our tape to honour a loved one or raise awareness of a cause close to their heart then we feel we must show our support in any way we can”.

Nitto Australia wishes to partner with local community organisations to raise awareness of worthy causes and let people know that if they have a cause to highlight then simply contact them or visit https://shopnittoaus.com/armband-for-causes/ to sign up for a discount code.
